D&AD - L'artisan Parfumeur Product Design Competition

Research

As L'artisan Parfumeur had created a brief which was to design for a new fragrance line, I looked at other brands and perfumes that had such a range. With this in mind i came to the conclusion that many of the exisiting bottles are very traditional in design it is only the packaging design which sets them apart.

After extracting the key elements I felt I would like to investigate further I decided on the idea for the purfume.
Nobody had created a range of perfume that when a completed range is purchased it can sit harmoniously together and be seen as not only perfume but a piece of beautiful design.

The idea of using a pyramid shape was because the range consists of four perfumes and traditionally a pyramid is made up of four equal side which when divided up all create an equal shape.

Design Considerations - Bottle Design

There were many considerations that needed to be thought of and one was would the perfume stand up. By being a pyramid the shape is balanced.

In addition to that, The design needed to be ergonamically designed so the pyramids sharp edges couldnt be assessed as a health and safety hazard. I eliminated this issue by bevelling the edges, apart from the cap. The cap was a later addition as at first I wanted the bottle to be fully one shape with only the dispenser to be the only attached part.

Unfortunataly after handling different perfumes in my research I felt a lid would be appropiate as not only does it protect the nozzle but it also ensures that the design element would be utilised to its full potential.

On a dressing table, desk or sideboard these neatly designed bottles would create a unique visual in anyones homes, not only a perfume but also a piece of beautifully crafted design.

Packaging Deisgn Outcomes

The Box design is very standard in shape with it being a cube, This not only allows for efficient stacking and product shipping but it also encompasses the perfume bottles. The box design was not standard and made for a personal and engaging experience when opening the new fragrance.

I didnt want the whole package to be compromised on a simple and boring design so I intergrated some interesting things on the design. Setting aside the key illustrations for now, The box is designed with care and when opening the initial cube face the customer is welcomed by a quotation given relating to the individual fragrance, so for instance, the true love quotation reads as follows :

" In the morning, that moment when I know it was you, when I could feel you breathing and we opened our eyes at the exact same time"

By having this it instantly gives the reader a sense of that emotion without even using the perfume yet. I feel when opening an packaging it is all about the experience not just the product.

Illustrations

The illustrations which cover sides of the packaging also relate to that emotion and were illustrated using a Si Scott pastiche. The illustrator who drew these from my ideas was a fellow class mate (Rashida Begum) and after seeing my concepts she was exited to offer her help.

I feel by designing this way it does not distract the customer of the brand and it still gives a subtle relation to the original branding of L'artisan parfumeur but I feel it is more beautiful and elegant instead of being harsh colours plastered with company brands and logos.
